I really feel in some way silly for asking this query. However right here we go, perhaps there’s one factor I’m not seeing:

On an IX, why would I begin peering with different ASNs, if each of us already hook up with the official route servers? I already know all their routes, solely factor altering could be I be taught them twice.

Attainable explanations I got here up with:
– Stability – we’re now not depending on the provision of the route servers
– Safety – I can particularly select which routes I enable from peer X

Alternatively:
– Managing peering with a number of friends creates further work, further (duplicate) routes
